Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy

Sports medicine is a subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery that deals mainly with joint injuries. They typically involve the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle and other joints. The main types of injuries are: ligament tears, damage to special structures in the joints like meniscus (knee) or labrum (shoulder), dislocations or instability of the joint, damage to the articular cartilage, and injuries to tendons. Initially, non-operative treatment is advised. However, many of these conditions require surgical treatment in the form of arthroscopic surgery.
